Fishing

Kalbarri's fishing charters and fishing spots offer some of the best year-round shore and boat fishing opportunities between Perth and Exmouth. Deep water adjacent to the shoreline and the cliffs create an environment where anything is possible! Grab a copy of the Kalbarri Fishing Guide from the visitor centre and stock up on bait at the local shops.

Kalbarri fishing charter companies

The best way to ensure you’re in the right place at the right time, with the right bait and equipment, is to join a Kalbarri fishing charter. Anglers have been delighted with catches of Samson fish, tuna, Spanish mackerel, cobia, dolphin fish, herring, small threadfin salmon, skipjack, trevally, blacktipped whaler shark, snapper, jewfish, groper and cod.

Kalbarri fishing spots along the shore

Tailor and mulloway are the main targets for shore fishing at Wittecarra Creek and Red Bluff. Anglers often reel in 7-8 kilogram monsters here, but an average catch weighs in around a kilogram. Garfish, whiting, dart and tarwhine can also be hooked during the summer months.

There are also many beaches within 30 kilometres of the township, including Lucky Bay, that are rated among the locals.

Murchison River estuary fishing spots

Estuary fishing can yield whiting and mulloway, plus the occasional chopper tailor, blue swimmer and mangrove crabs. Further upstream (accessed by dinghy or 4WD) your patience may be rewarded with some good-sized black bream.

Please remember that many Kalbarri fishing spots can be dangerous in rough conditions. The river mouth can also be hazardous under certain conditions. Do not take unnecessary risks. Check fishing reports and forecasts with the local Voluntary Marine Rescue, or join one of the experienced Kalbarri fishing charters.
