Originally a one acre block was purchased by
John Hosken on the 18th July 1874 for £7. 10 shillings. He sold it to
his brother William Hosken for £9 on 7thSeptember 1875. It was part
of the estate that passed to his wife Hannah upon his death on 17th
August 1881 aged 34 years.

On Saturday 13th August 1910 it was auctioned at the
Club Hotel in Geraldton as part of Hannah Hosken’s estate. It was bought by a
business man Henry Carson for £130 and he built the present shop which it’s
first occupants C Stokes & Co opened a saddlery in what is now the shoe
shop in October – November 1911. The front section of the shop was divided into
two shops. The south section was opened by William Lucas in 1912 as a general
store and the north section opened as a Barber, Tobacconist and billiard saloon
by EH Snowdon in December 1912.

William Lucas lent out too much credit and went broke. Isaac
Wolfe is supposed to have had this store for some time and then it was taken
over by C Stokes & Co. In 1927 when the present Newsagency was opened the
Barber and Tobacconist Alf Barlow moved into it with his billiard table, Stokes
removed the centre wall and it became one big shop. Around this time Charles
Stokes bought the building from Henry Carson and it was handed down to his son
Wally who ran the store until he and his wife decided to retire. It was then
sold to J M Williams & Co in 1949. By this time it had changed to a drapery
store and the Williams family operated it for 54 years. The present owners took
over the store on 28th April 2003.

Geoff, Joy and Penny Cripps intend to continue to keep this store
