Kalbarri Uncovered: 3 Days of Scenic Beauty & Adventure

3 Day Itinerary Image 4 2026

Overview

Three days in Kalbarri invite you to step a little further away from the busy rhythm of everyday life and a little closer to nature. A relaxed getaway curated for those who appreciate setting time aside to slow down and enjoy the comforts of nature, this itinerary encourages adventuring couples, travelling families and those simply seeking discovery to visit Kalbarri and experience all that it has to offer.

Begin among the ancient river gorges of Kalbarri National Park, where sunrise light spills across iconic places like Nature’s Window, Kalbarri Skywalk and Z Bend, reminding you just how vast and quiet the landscape can be. From there, the days drift easily between coastal swims at Blue Holes, cliff-top lookouts like Red Bluff and Eagle Gorge and slow evenings by the Murchison River as the sun slips away. By the final day, it’s the simple moments that stay with you most; pelicans on the foreshore, wandering local shops, and a sky full of stars overhead.

Planning Your Visit

Access

Kalbarri is approximately a six-hour drive north of Perth. Visitors may also fly to Geraldton and hire a vehicle for the scenic 1 hour 45-minute drive north. The fly–drive option allows visitors to arrive earlier and spend more time in the landscape.

Seasonal Awareness

Inland gorge walks are best undertaken early during warmer months, while coastal trails benefit from afternoon sea breezes. Blue Holes Fish Habitat Protection Area is typically calmest in the morning, when water clarity is strongest.

Whale migration (June–November) and wildflower season (July–November) bring seasonal movement and biodiversity to both inland and coastal environments.

Visitors are encouraged to remain on marked trails, carry adequate water and wear appropriate footwear when walking inland. These small considerations help protect fragile terrain and cultural heritage while ensuring a safer and more rewarding visit.

DAY 1: RIVER GORGE EXPLORATION & TOUR PLANNING

Morning

  • Kalbarri National Park - Inland River Gorge Lookouts (Summer, 5am/5:30am start. Winter, 7am/7:30am start):

After a restful night get ready for a day packed full of adventure. Waking up early to ensure you beat the heat, especially in the summertime, drive 30 minutes out to the Inland River Gorges section of our National Park land (park fees apply). Here you can visit the Natures Window, the Skywalk and the Z-Bend Lookout.

There are several hikes to explore in our national park land as well. For the more adventurous traveler planning to do a hike, allow a few hours to complete as the hikes in this area are Class 4 and be sure to start at sunrise during the summertime to avoid the extremely dangerous temperatures. This time of day also provides some of the most stunning lighting for perfect picture taking opportunities.

During the springtime you can add wildflower spotting to the list of things to do in this area as it blossoms with colour from July to October. On the way back to town be sure to stop in at Meanarra Hill Lookout for stunning views of the townsite and the Murchison River.

Blue Holes is the must-see area for snorkeling on the coast. Suitable for all ages and protected from the oncoming swell by large sections of limestone reef, this Fish Habit Protected Area is perfect for getting up close with marine life.

Chinamen’s Beach is another great place for a dip and marks the start of the river beach section. The local IGA and the local bakeries will provide everything you need to create a tasty picnic for the family.

Afternoon:

  • Exploring the coast (2pm onwards):

The coastal beaches morph into the Coastal Cliff section of the Kalbarri National Park, these include Red Bluff, Mushroom Rock and Eagle Gorge to name a few. The furthest lookout being only 16km from town, these stops boast stunning views from atop the cliffs and provide an amazing place to view the sunset from.

From June to October these lookouts provide the best vantage points to spot the Humpback Whales on their annual migration. The Boardwalk (600m one way), which was built in between Island Rock and Natural Bridge is an incredibly scenic walk which is not to be missed.

Evening:

  • A sunset view of your choosing (Winter, 5pm start. Summer 6pm start):

Choose from either a takeaway food experience to be enjoyed along one of the Coast Cliff Lookouts for lovely sunset views or dine in along the main strip of town to see the sun set over the Murchison River.

Many visitors also include a stop at Hutt Lagoon on their return journey or continue south to access the Abrolhos Islands via Geraldton.

Marine tours along the coastal cliffs offer a water-level perspective of Kalbarri’s geology and marine life. Guided walking tours and cultural interpretation experiences delivered with local custodians provide additional insight into the landscape and its history.

With time, the landscape reveals deeper connections to light, season, wildlife and Country. Longer stays also support local accommodation providers, hospitality venues and guiding experiences throughout the region.

Kalbarri is not a stopover. It is a concentrated expression of Western Australia’s vast landscapes - faraway in character, closer than expected.
